Vocaluxe: Getting Started

Start off by downloading Vocaluxe here.

At the time that I am writing this, there are two options on the above link. You can download the official "stable" version at the top, or one of the Alpha builds further down. As usual, it's a choice between newer features (second option) and a more reliable game (first option). Presently, the second option contains a Party Mode where the first doesn't; this is the key difference between the two.

Once you've downloaded it, no installation is required. Simply put the folder somewhere sensical (e.g. the C:\ drive or C:\Program Files), and open either Vocaluxe.exe or Vocaluxe_64.exe. Whichever of these options applies to you depends on whether you have a 32 or 64 bit system; if you're not sure, only one of them will work for you anyway.

Similarly to UltraStar, the first screen is a set of basic options. "Sing" allows you to play the game, and "Options" entails gameplay setup. There is now a "Profiles" section, in which you can set up player profiles (see the introductory section).

Remember that Vocaluxe relies primarily on the mouse, rather than keyboard controls - this can take some getting used to if, like me, you're used to USDX! Left clicking on an option will take you into it - right click at any time to go back to the previous screen.

If you already have a song collection on your computer from playing UltraStar, you might now want to close Vocaluxe and tell the game to reference the same song directory. To do this, navigate to the Vocaluxe directory, right-click on config.xml, and open with notepad (or another text editor of your choice).

Scroll down to find the songpath options, as detailed in the image below. In between the SongFolder1 and /SongFolder1 tags, enter the path where you will find your UltraStar Deluxe song collection.

Re-load Vocaluxe. If you have a sizeable collection, the first startup will be noticeably slow. Don't worry - it will get much quicker on subsequent boot-ups!

If you've never used UltraStar, you might still want to download and install this for the purpose of adding new songs, but use Vocaluxe for gameplay. Please see my guide on adding songs to UltraStar Deluxe.
